February and March

Language Arts

We continue to work on summarizing stories (naming the characters, setting, problem , solution, beginning, middle and end). We continue to read all of the Robert Munsch books as each student will soon summarize therir favourite Robert Munsch story and make it into a movie poster! We are puttung our how to writing pieces into a real book style version!

Math

We have now began addition to 18. Please see information below for adding to 18 strategies that will be introduced in class.

Adding up to 18 Strategies

1.Doubles Strategy

youtu.be/jG6n5xLt-0Q

This strategy means you are adding a number to the exact same number. It is important to memorize all these doubles up to 18!

Eg. 5+5=10

Doubling Strategy

youtu.be/7PRIBdFtRNA?list=WL&t=2

2.Doubles Plus or Minus 1

If you know 8+8=16 than you can add 8+9= by adding 8+8+1= 17 or 8+8=16+1=17

If you know 8+8=16 than you can add 8+9= by adding 9+9-1=17 or 9+9=18-1=17

3.Flip Flop Strategy

If you have 5+3 and you know 3+5 then you know both!

4.Adding Zero Strategy

Any number plus 0 equals to the same numer eg. 5+0=5  7+0=7

5.Counting on Strategy

Put the bigger number in your head first and count on 2 or 3 spaces. eg. 3+5=? start with 5 and and 3 more...6, 7, 8

6.Magic strategy

If you are adding 2 numbers where they are 2 apart such as 4+6, you can add it by taking the number in between and doubling it, knowing that 5+5=10. then you know that 4+6=10

7.Plus 9 Strategy

9+5=

9 add 1 to make 10

5 minus 1 to get 4

so 10+5 =15

Voila!

8.Making Ten Strategy

They will learn what needs to included and practice using transition words while writing thier own. Finally, we will continue larning about our strategies for becoming better readers.

Math

We are now representing 2 digit numbers in a variety of ways. We will practice making numbers up to 100 with base ten blocks and one cubes. We will order and compare numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest.

Science

We continue with our Hot and Cold unit.

They will set a reading goal for independant reading and will review it at the end of the month. Finally, they will continue to focus on writing. What Counts, What Matters and What is Important: capitlas, periods, spaces, using the lines on the page, writng a seed paragraph, writing a paragrapph with a beginning, middle and end, what to do if you dont know how to spell a word (use your dictionary, ask a friend, uses the word wall)

Math

We will continue with Increasing patterns.

We will begin our numbers unit. They will beging exploring the hundred chart. This will include skip counting by 2, 5 and 10 at different starting points forwards and backwards. when skip counting by 10's they need to practice starting at any number. When skip counting by 2's they have to start at both odd and even numbers.  They will also practice odd and even numbers. They will explore representing numbers in many different ways.

Science

We will begin our hot and cold unit.

Social

We will begin studying traditions and cultures of the three communites of Saskatoon, Iqaluit and Meteghan.

Subtraction Strategies

1. Subtracting Zero

The answer is always the number that is not zero.

5-0=5

2. Subtracting One

The answer is always 1 less than the bigger number.

6-1=5

3. Counting Back

Put the bigger number in your head then count back the smaller number.

9-3=6

4.Subtracting the same number.

When you subtract the same number the answer is always zero.

6-6=0

5.Related Facts

If you know 10-6=4 then you know 10-4=6

6.Reverse Doubles and and Reverse Near Doubles

4+4=8 so 8-4=4

5+5=9 so 9-4=5

7. Making 10

If you know your ten facts with addition then you can subtract from 10!
eg. 10-2=8,  10-6=4
